Service Description

Advanced Watercolor Techniques: Color and Surface This short workshop series with Julia Holmaas is for students with some prior watercolor experience. Each workshop will cover a different painting challenge. Week 1 (3/6): Avoiding Wimpy Watercolors: Pigment and H2O Ratio, Week 2 (3/13): Value of Planning your Painting, Week 3 (3/20): Gouache: Painting in "Reverse", Week 4 (3/27): Beyond the Brush: Tools for watercolor painting. Participants will need their own paint palette, paints, and brushes. Papers/surfaces and some additional tools will be supplied. *Please note that you may book individual sessions/topics separately or you may book all four together and save $20! March 6: Avoiding Wimpy Watercolors: Pigment and H2O ratio, and Mixing color During this session students will learn to successfully mix and apply watercolor pigment to create a vivid and strong watercolor painting. Julia will provide guidance as to the paint/water ratio and how to apply pigment. March 13: Value of Planning your Painting After exploring differences in watercolor papers students will use quick values studies as a guide to paint either a landscape or or a still life on the paper of their choice. March 20: Gouache: Painting in “Reverse” Transparent watercolorists paint from light to dark and white paper is left for highlights. With opaque gouache painting white or light colors are applied at the end. This session provides students withexperience in painting with opaque gouache rather than traditional transparent watercolor. March 27: Beyond the Brush: Tools for Watercolor Painting Many different things can be used to apply and manipulate watercolor: credit cards, feathers, sticks, painting knives, sponges, rubber stamps, plastic wrap and more. We will make holiday cards while exploring various “painting” tools. Suggested Supply List: - Covered palette - Brushes: 1" and 2" flat brush, #4, #8, and #12 round - Palette knife - Paint: good quality professional grade watercolor paintin the following colors: permanent alizarin crimson, bright red or permanent red, new gamboge, lemon yellow, French ultramarine, Prussian blue
